Harvesting

Tropic Ventures has made research into sustainable production of Mahoe, Hibiscus elatus, into one of its main features of demonstrating a method of sound ecological management of the land for timber in balance with the evolution of the local ecology.

First Experimental Thinning 2003

In June 2003, on the site of Las Casas de la Selva, Patillas, Puerto Rico, Augusto Ingellis, Andre San Fiorenzo, Joe Carasquillo, Carmello Torres, and 3t Vakil carried out a harvesting operation of approximately 1000 board feet of Mahoe (Hibiscus elatus). The trees were in plots where it had become necessary to thin out the forest.

In a process that lasted 11 days, 27 trees were felled and the logs carefully winched up a steep slope using a tractor and winch. Slipways were used to minimise damage to the forest. The logs were carried to the portable band mill set up nearby, where they were de-barked. Most of the trees harvested measured between 8" and 12" in diameter. They were bandsawn in the interest of achieving maximum yield and maximum thickness excluding the pith.

Second Experimental Thinning 2004

In July 2004, on the site of Las Casas de la Selva, Patillas, Puerto Rico, Andre Sanfiorenzo and Robert Townsend headed up the second thinning operation of approximately 1500 board feet of Mahoe (Hibiscus elatus), aided by 3t Vakil, Manuel Sanfiorenzo, Storm Townsend, Carmelo Torre, Javier Rojas, and Sally Silverstone.

Third Experimental Thinning 2006

Crew: Andre Sanfiorenzo, Andrés Rúa, 3t Vakil
Javier Rojas, Javielito, Celestino.

900 board feet
10 trees were felled of diameters from 11" to 17"

See the album page for more images of felling, debarking & sawing.
As part of Tropic Ventures' ongoing sustainable forestry program,
more Puerto Rican native hardwood trees are being
planted at Las Casas de la Selva.
