All woods harvested from our Liberation thinning study plots, in collaboration with Frank Wadsworth, Peter Weaver, and Department of Natural Resources personel Enrique Santiago, Victor Rodriguez, Vivien Vera, & Eduard Cintron.

Caracolillo Homalium racemosum, Specific Gravity: 0.77, very hard and heavy, moderately strong, fine texture, interlocked grain.

Caimitillo Micropholis chrysophylloides, Specific Gravity: 0.68, hard, heavy, fine textured. Light yellowish brown.

Roble Blanco Tabebuia heterophylla, Specific Gravity: 0.58, moderately hard and heavy. Light brown with fine brown lines, golden hue, and chatoyance. Takes a beautiful polish.

Roble de Sierra, Tabebuia schumanniana, Specific Gravity: unknown.

Motillo Sloanea berteriana, Specific Gravity: 0.80, very hard and heavy. varies from yellow brown to pink or dark brown, sometimes with dark brown stripes.

Santa Maria, Calophyllum brasiliense, Specific Gravity: 0.55, hard, moderately heavy. Light pink to red brown with some dark stripes and chatoyance.

Reina de las Flores, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Specific Gravity 0.53, moderately hard and heavy. Fleshy tones with darker stripes.

Teak Tectona grandis, Specific Gravity: 0.55. Moderately hard and heavy. Golden reddy brown. Fine textured, straight grained, oily feel.

Ausubo, Manilkara bidentata, also known a Balata or Massaranduba, a native hard wood of Puerto Rico. Harvested and milled, November 2007. Available from Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry Project in Puerto Rico. Very limited quantity of large slabs available now. The wood is very hard, strong, fine textured, durable and heavy, with a specific gravity of 0.85.

Wood from fallen trees in the area:

Dominican Mahogany, Swietenia mahagoni, Specific Gravity: 0.7- 0.8, moderately hard and heavy. Rich red brown. Irregular wavy grain. Takes a beautiful polish.

Espino Rubial or Martinique prickly-ash Zanthoxylum martinicense, Specific Gravity: 0.46. Hard. Light yellow brown. Medium to fine texture.This 80 year old tree fell on top of electrical lines and left the area without electricity for 2 days. The tree had obviously been dying for around 5 years and the wood shows the unique spalting. We have several slabs.
